I hadn’t realized this was so widespread a practice until I checked Wikipedia and found that variants exist in Bulgaria (chukam na dǎrvo), Georgia (kheze daḳaḳuneba), Indonesia (amit-amit jabang bayi), Norway (bank i bordet ) and some two dozen other countries.
